What is ATLAS.ti?

ATLAS.ti is a powerful workbench for the qualitative analysis of large bodies of textual, graphical, audio and video data.

Sophisticated tools help you to arrange, reassemble, and manage your material in creative, yet systematic ways. ATLAS.ti keeps you focused on the material itself. Whether your field is anthropology, economics, criminology, or medicine: ATLAS.ti will meet your qualitative analysis needs!

Huge Variety Of Media Types

ATLAS.ti offers an unsurpassed range of media for you to work with: Whether it’s coding hundreds of documents, audio clips or photos, ATLAS.ti will never let you down!

Work with text documents in all major formats–including txt,.doc, .docx, .odt, and, of course, .pdf. Perform fully automated searches across one or multiple documents, auto-coding, and other powerful semantic operations to extract meaning.

Enjoy the freedom of working with dozens of graphic and audio formats (.wav, ,mp3, .wma, etc.) as well as most common video types (.avi, .mp4, .wmv, etc.).

You can import data from Evernote, Twitter, and your favorite Reference Manager for a literature review . Or import entire surveys to analyze answers to open-ended questions.

Explore Material In Great Depth

Get to know your material in tremendous depth. Code systematically and develop a system of meaning that unlocks your specific research subject. Explore your data with the Network Editor, the Text Search Tool, word clouds, word frequency tables, and through the various query options.

These tools will help you to discover the intricate hidden “texture” of your data, its interwoven meanings.

Powerful Tool set

ATLAS.ti offers a set of tools and features that are powerful and flexible enough to get to the bottom of even the most complex data material.

Your central workspace in ATLAS.ti serves as a container for your project’s data. Access to all basic project components such as your documents, highlighted/coded data segments, codes, memos, hyperlinks, groups, or networks is fast and comfortable.

Coding can be done by simply dragging codes onto the selected piece of data. Object Managers, the Project Explorer, and the Co-occurrence Explorer let you browse and navigate through your project data.

Link your findings in a semantically meaningful way.

Visualize your findings and interpretations in a digital mind map as you go.

Unique Features

The interactive margin area is a unique work space in ATLAS.ti not surpassed by any other program on the market. It permits a uniquely intuitive way of interacting with your data, digitally transferring the traditional paper-and-pen analogy in the digital world.

The quotation level is also radically unique to ATLAS.ti. If offers an analytic level below coding and better supports inductive, interpretive research approaches like grounded theory, hermeneutic, discourse analysis, sociology of knowledge, or phenomenology than any other software.

This can also be said about the ATLAS.ti network / visualization function. It offers the most integrated way of working with your data, it is a tool for visualization as well as for analysis, for data organization as well as conceptual level analytic work and data presentation.

Because of the way ATLAS.ti manages data under the hood, it allows for handling much larger projects than other products: ATLAS.ti handle projects that contain thousands of documents and/or tens of thousands of coded data segments.

Team Work

ATLAS.ti supports collaborative work in several highly effective ways. Dedicated tools as well as some general principles of the software make collaborations a breeze.

Long Data Lifespan

To support multi-method multi-user projects across space and time (longitudinal studies), project data export using XML is available. With XML, the proprietary nature of most software systems can be mitigated. This is indeed a mandatory need in scientific settings. ATLAS.ti’s dedicated XML schema influenced the development of the QuDEX language for the purpose of archiving qualitative data.

Great User Support

ATLAS.ti comes with unsurpassed service and multiple sources of support. Get a first overview of the software during one of our free webinar hold in different languages.

Further, peer-to-peer support is available through the ATLAS.ti User Forum with thousands of members. The ATLAS.ti Research Blog offers a range of articles written by ATLAS.ti users world-wide in a large variety of topics.

Training

ATLAS.ti workshops are held worldwide, face-to-face or online. A self-paced e-learning course is also available in English and Spanish.

System Requirements

Windows

Supported operating systems:  Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows 10

Minimum*Recommended**
RAM4 GB8 GB
Disk Space100 MB1GB and up, depending on project sizes
* Minimum configuration means just that: You will be able to install and run the program. You will be able to perform all basic functions and work with text and multimedia files. But please do not expect to work with larger or a great number of multimedia files or to run auxiliary applications in parallel.** The more available resources (especially RAM and processor power) your system has, the more comfortably and smoothly will you be able to work with ATLAS.ti. For work with multimedia material, embedded content, or for running auxiliary applications we strongly recommend PC systems of a solid mid- to upper-level capacity.

Mac OS X

ATLAS.ti Mac runs on any Mac with OS version 10.10 ‘Yosemite’ or higher.

Installation – Windows

Installing ATLAS.ti could not be easier and works without a problem in the vast majority of all cases.

Individual Installation

If you already have a a trial version of ATLAS.ti 8 on your computer, you can simply “activate” it by entering your license key. Go to File | Options | License and enter your key.

You will be able to continue using projects created with the trial version; no special steps are required.

If you are making a clean installation, start the installation by double-clicking the .exe file you have downloaded and saved to your computer.

This installs, if needed:

  • Internet Explorer 11
  • Microsoft .Net 4.6
  • ATLAS.ti Prerequisites (3rd party component)
  • ATLAS.ti Core (the EXE, DLL and other files)

Enter the license key when asked.

Updates are performed by the ATLAS.ti updater.

Make sure to keep the installation file and your license key secure for future use (e.g., if you need to re-install the program).

Note: The end-user installer does not have .Net embedded to reduce download size. Hence, if your computer does do not have this version of .Net installed, the installer will download .Net during the installation. This requires an internet connection, and can make the installation slow. To speed this up or to avoid the need for an active internet connection, you can manually install .Net 4.6 prior running the ATLAS.ti installer.

Important: For the end-user installer to work properly, your OS must be updated to the latest available version. Otherwise, .Net 4.6 will fail to install. Therefore, you should run “Check for Windows Updates.” .Net 4.6 fails to install at least on Windows 8.x if it is not patched and updated, and the ATLAS.ti installer consequently fails with the non-descriptive message “Failed.” – Also, in some cases the ATLAS.ti installer may take a long time to complete if a Windows Update is running simultaneously. A simple way to get around this is to ensure the Windows Update has completed and your computer has freshly restarted before starting the ATLAS.ti installation.

Information for System Administrators

Installing ATLAS.ti for multiple users is also unproblematic.

If you are the license/system administrator and your users already have the trial version of ATLAS.ti 8 on their computers, they can simply “activate” it by entering the license key of your multi-user license: Go to File | Options | License, and enter your key.

Users will be able to continue using projects created with the trial version; no special steps are required.

Installation on Individual’s PC

Please proceed as described above under “Individual Installation”

Installation on multiple PCs

As the system administrator, you can download atlasti_8.x.msi and

atlastiPrerequisites_8.x.msi.

You can then integrate the MSI packages into your preferred software deployment solution. This task is dependent on what product your institution/company uses. The following tasks must be performed:

  1. Ensure Internet Explorer 11 is installed
  2. Ensure Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 is installed
  3. Install atlastiPrerequisites_8.x.msi
  4. Install atlasti_8.x.msi .

Both ATLAS.ti .msi packages are standard packages and support standard .msi commands and properties. The ATLAS.ti license key can be fed in using the PIDKEY property. Example:

msiexec /i c:\path\to\Atlasti_8_x_xx.msi PIDKEY=12345-67890-ABCDE-FGHIJ-KLMNO

To update ATLAS.ti, install the most current versions of both .msi packages.
